The Solano County Licensed Family Child Care Association was established over twenty-five years ago. The purpose was for providers to meet and get to know each other and network.
Today, the Association plays a much larger role and brings professionalism to family child care. Providers are mentored and receive early childhood training through various classes, workshops and conferences to enhance the quality of their programs and allow them to operate and manage a successful small business.
The meetings are very informative, keeping providers updated on licensing issues, liability insurance, legislative issues, health care coverage, up-to-date tax changes, retirement information and marketing ideas, just to name a few.
Classes are taught on such topics as Arts & Crafts Ideas, Curriculum for Infants and Toddlers, Contracts, Food and Nutrition, etc. Guest speakers are invited to share specialty information and educate providers about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Working with Children with Disabilities, and Dealing with Asthma; representatives from the major supply companies like Kaplan and Lakeshore visit and bring the hottest new toys and curriculum ideas.
Visits to other family child care homes are planned periodically so that providers are exposed to different environements and get a variety of ideas and suggestions on how to set-up their own facility.
The most important benefit of the Association is that providers meet new friends and build lasting relationships. They are able to teach, learn from, motivate, support and help one another succeed in the challenging field of early care and education. Equally important, providers take a break from business and get together for potlucks and ice cream socials just to relax and have fun.
The Association also offers information to providers on grant and stipend programs that are available; is linked with the California Association for Family Child Care (CAFCC) and is closely affiliated with First Five Solano, the Children’s Network, Solano Community College and many other resources to assist in the daily challenges of operating a child care business.
